Estimator for the City of Mount Vema 5th Avenue South

18/12/2020

Do you like working with numbers? Do you enjoy meeting and negotiating with people and suppliers? Handy Deed is looking for an Estimator (construction estimator or cost engineer) to work on the City of Mount Vema 5th Avenue South project, to draw up assessments of how much it will cost to build the project.

The 5th Avenue South is a section of the 20 kilometers road that makes the City of Mount Vema Breakwaters, a set of barriers, designed to protect the floating city from the force of the waves. The avenue will be divided into seven different sections, however the section 5th Avenue South, will be the southern part of the City Plans and the main public access to the airport via the 5th Avenue South West. To the east, the road will be connected to the 5th Avenue South East, accessible to cargo only as the South East route will provide a priority express link to the industrial side of the City, connecting the Airport and the Port of Mount Vema.

As the estimator for the 5th Avenue South project, you will consider all pertinent information about the project and decide how much it would cost to meet the project needs. You would then need to submit the bid for the work before other competitors do. Quality will be considered alongside the price, so the winning bid will not always be the cheapest one.

The successful candidate will not only need to submit budgetary costs and analysis, but also submit a quality report too. When ready to submit, you would be required to always follow the instructions set by the Government, for example if it says fill out a form to contact, that is exactly what you would be expected to do, or the bid will be disqualified.

Responsibilities
Note: Not all bids submitted are successful. So, if the bid is not successful, you will be given another project to work and to submit the bid before other competitors do.
Your typical day will include:
  • overseeing the project to ensure costs remain in line with forecasts
  • compiling bids for work
  • calculating the cost of materials, transport, labour and equipment hire
  • obtaining quotes for all predicted requirements from sub-contractors and suppliers
  • collating detailed price lists of everything needed on construction
  • clarifying the client's needs and expectations
  • reading blueprints and taking measurements
  • making use of relevant computer software such as Excel, Word etc
  • assessing and adhering to all risk assessments and health and safety requirements
  • keeping up to date with inflation, exchange rates and projected timescale costs
  • making visits to proposed construction sites
  • liaising with others including construction managers, planners and design teams
  • presenting bids to client and answering their questions
  • completing work quality submissions
  • preparing and submitting quotations for work.

Salary and Benefits
The salary is:
$50,000 US dollars per year for a Senior, chartered or master estimator
$40,000 US dollars for an Experienced estimator
$30,000 US dollars for a newly trained estimator
Salaries are paid monthly in arrears.
The benefits include paid medical coverage, paid vacation, sick days, holidays, and a pension plan. Benefits are only applicable after you complete three months on the job.

Working hours
Your working hours will usually be 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with some occasional evening and weekend work where necessary to meet bid submission deadlines, some late nights can be expected.

Requirements
If your application is accepted, you will be required to open a bank account with a Mount Vema bank, if you do not already have a Mount Vema bank account, and a Mount Vema work visa.

What to expect
  • The bids you submit will not always be successful. So, although there is an air of celebration when they are, you will also need to be prepared and be able to bounce back when they are not.
  • When undertaking site visits, you will be required to wear protective clothing.

Qualifications
Formal educational qualification is not necessary, but you have studied science, IT, technology, English and maths it would be useful, especially HNC, HND or degree in subject areas such as:
  • construction management
