23/12/2020

Handy Deed, the construction company of Mount Vema is looking for a Geological Oceanographer to examine the section of the seabed allocated for the construction of the 5th Avenue South West, for better coordination of construction. The work will include undertaking lab/office-based work, which will involve computer modelling, and at sea on a research vessel, to gather data from subsurface instruments.

As the Geological Oceanographer for the 5th Avenue South West project, you will be involved in examining the seabed, construction of the project, prevention of pollution, and initiatives in connection with climate change and renewable energy associated with the management of the 5th Avenue South West project.

The 5th Avenue South West is a section of the 20 kilometers road that will make the City of Mount Vema Breakwaters, the set of barriers, designed to protect the floating city from the force of the waves.

Responsibilities
Your responsibilities include:
  • plan and carry out research expeditions
  • collect samples of rocks, and data from the sea floor allocated for the 5th Avenue South West project, using specialised equipment and techniques
  • analyse samples for natural and contaminant composition
  • look at life forms and matter, present in sea water
  • perform simulations of ocean phenomena using computer or mathematical models
  • use statistical models of laboratory and field data to investigate hypotheses and make predictions
  • analyse and interpret data from samples, measurements and remote sensing aids
  • write and submit reports on research, activities and findings
  • making recommendations about the proposed use of the site.
  • Oversee the construction of the project, prevention of pollution, and initiatives in connection with climate change and renewable energy associated with the management of the 5th Avenue South West project.

Salary and Benefits

$70,000 US dollars per year for highly experienced Geological Oceanographer
$55,000 US dollars for an experienced Geological Oceanographer
$35,000 US dollars starting salary
Salaries are paid monthly in arrears.
The benefits include paid medical coverage, paid vacation, sick days, holidays, and a pension plan. Benefits are only applicable after you complete three months on the job.

Working hours
Your working hours will usually be 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with extra hours which may be required to meet project deadlines. However, the hours when at sea, will be less regular. Time at sea can vary from days to months.

Requirements
If your application is accepted, you will be required to open a bank account with a Mount Vema bank, if you do not already have a Mount Vema bank account, and a Mount Vema work visa.

What to expect
  • You will spend a lot of time working at home, in a lab or office using computer modelling systems. However, you will also be spending time away at sea (in Mount Vema) on a research vessel or a specially equipped yacht, sampling and gathering data from instruments far below the surface. You need to be comfortable using diving equipment and submersible vehicles to deploy and recover instruments.
  • Conditions at sea may be hazardous and physically demanding, with cramped accommodation and difficult weather conditions. Adjusting to periods away at sea and working long hours may be challenging. However, most oceanographers view time at sea as an essential and rewarding part of the work.
  • You will often work with professionals from related disciplines and also with marine meteorologists.

Qualifications
You will need a degree in a subject such as oceanography, ocean science, geology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, marine sciences, geography, maths or physics. Or a degree in ocean science, oceanography or marine science combined with other earth sciences.

Skills
You will need to have:
  • excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for working with teams and reporting findings
  • knowledge and experience of the marine environment
  • good computer literacy and some experience of computational and mathematical modelling
  • data analysis skils
  • good observational skills and attention to detail for analysing samples
  • determination, perseverance and problem-solving skills, while working away at sea and when carrying out experiments
  • a flexible approach to work
  • the ability to work well both in a team and alone
  • team project experience as you may be planning and carrying out research assignments
  • openness to ideas and concepts of scientific disciplines other than your own.

Work experience
Related experience in marine science or oceanography research is an advantage.
