Policy Officer for the Dept. for the Sovereignty of the Realm

The Mount Vema Ministry of Law and Constitutional Affairs, seeks to appoint a Policy Officer for its Department for the Sovereignty of Realm, to bring a flexible approach and initiative to a career as a policy officer, in order to adapt to this Mount Vema’s rapidly evolving field of work and make autonomous decisions in accordance with the Vema Seamount Declaration of Sovereignty.
 
Mount Vema citizenship is not a requirement to apply for this vacancy.
 
The successful candidate will work across a range of functions in the public sector, advising appointed or elected officials working with or for His Mount Vema Majesty’s Government only as far as the Vema Seamount Declaration of Sovereignty concerns. You will assist districts and central government officials to ensure that their actions do not violate any section of the Vema Seamount Declaration of Sovereignty, as they research, develop and implement public policies that affects or will affect everyone in Mount Vema and the territory itself.
 
Responsibilities
As a Policy Officer, you will need to:
  • undertake or commission research for your Department
  • gather and analyse data and information that could be in violation of any section of the Vema Seamount Declaration of Sovereignty
  • develop expertise in all sections of the Vema Seamount Declaration of Sovereignty, or draw on the expertise of others
  • keep up to date with social, political and economic developments of the Kingdom of Mount Vema, and brief others on these
  • provide advice to senior business managers, stakeholders and decision makers
  • support or coordinate meetings, conferences or debates, sometimes including diary management to promote a better understanding of the Vema Seamount Declaration of Sovereignty within His Mount Vema Majesty’s Realm
  • write briefings, reports, and speeches
  • deliver oral briefings and presentations
  • carry out consultations with internal and external stakeholders - including colleagues, or members of the public
  • work with a wide range of people and organisations, including senior managers, public office officials and members of the public
  • manage and track the delivery of political or organisational priorities
  • write and monitor communications to ensure consistency and accuracy
 
Salary and Benefits
The salary for Policy Officer is $50,000 US dollars per year
The salary for Policy Assistant Officer is $30,000 US dollars per year
Salaries are paid monthly in arrears.
The benefits include paid medical coverage, paid vacation, sick days, holidays, and a pension plan. Benefits are only applicable after you complete three months on the job.
 
Working hours
You will work normal business hours 9am to 5pm (Mount Vema Time Zone = UTC+1) Monday to Friday however, you may be expected to work longer or irregular hours, or evenings and weekends, to attend meetings or events, or if necessary to meet deadlines in a high profile or fast-moving policy area.
 
Work Conditions
You will be provided with a private Office at a later stage however, initially you will be expected to work from home. Travel is almost always involved in this role, and therefore the work environment may vary quite dramatically day to day.
 
 Requirements
If your application is accepted, you will be required to open a bank account with a Mount Vema bank, if you do not already have a Mount Vema bank account.

  • Policy evolves rapidly, so you will have to adapt to what could be frequent changes to situations or priorities. This can be exciting and will give you lots of variety, but it can also be frustrating and stressful at times. You may find that something you have been working on for months is no longer relevant, or that you need to change direction quickly and meet tight deadlines.
  • You could have the opportunity to influence or help implement district, national and even international changes to improve the experiences and lives of others.
 
Qualifications
An undergraduate degree is required, but degree level and subject requirements vary.
A degree in one of the following may help:
  • public administration and social policy
  • economics
  • anthropology
  • philosophy
  • politics and internal relations
  • psychology
  • sociology.
 
Skills
You will need to have:
  • good written and verbal communication skills, to absorb complex information and present it to different audiences in a clear and accessible way
  • interpersonal skills, to work and build relationships with a wide range of people holding different views or understanding of the law
  • the ability to understand diverse perspectives and to be able to successfully influence and negotiate
  • effective research and analysis skills, needed to build an evidence base from which you will work
  • good organisation skills, to track priorities, work to deadlines and manage projects
  • a flexible and adaptable approach, in order to respond to shifting priorities and a rapidly evolving external environment
  • the ability and desire to acquire and maintain knowledge of a policy area or areas
  • a commitment to learning and improvement
  • good political judgement and initiative, for making decisions autonomously or advising others on the most effective course of action.
 
Training
Training is not provided. You will be expected to develop your own ways of work, proving that you follow the protocol and the expected codes of conduct.
