Security Officers for the Border Security Agency

The Mount Vema Border Security Agency, is looking for Border Security Officers to protect the Kingdom of Mount Vema from threats of, smuggling, fraud, human trafficking, terrorism, and illegal trade of items such as narcotics and endangered animals.
 
As a Border Security officer, you will form part of a frontline law enforcement agency, tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that the border of His Mount Vema Majesty’s realm is safe and secure 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The work involves patrolling the gates (entry and exit points) of Mount Vema, and will include the entire maritime zone, focusing mainly on the provisional docks, and at a later stage the Port of Mount Vema and the airport, using your skill and intuition to monitor people, items, and detecting risks. You may be required to work at the Worldwide Distribution Center (a sorting office where most mail entering or leaving the Kingdom of Mount Vema will be processed).
 
Using your authority to interview suspicious travellers, you will search baggage, and cargo where appropriate. Where issues arise, you will alert security services to people of interest and use the intelligence you have gathered about possible threats to help them.
 
Mount Vema citizenship is not a requirement to apply for this vacancy, however applications from high risk countries may not be considered. High risk countries will be listed and delisted from the Mount Vema Official Webpage for Travel Advise.
 
Responsibilities
As a Border Security officer, you will need to:
  • check passports and travel documents of passengers arriving in Mount Vema
  • question passengers about their reasons for visiting the Kingdom of Mount Vema and plans while they are in the country
  • search people, their luggage, and freight vessels, for prohibited items (such as drugs, counterfeit goods, cash, tobacco, firearms or endangered plants or animals) being taken in or out of the country
  • enforce rules and regulations, sometimes by removing goods or arranging for illegal immigrants to be detained
  • report concerns to other organisations such as the Mount Vema Police, The Revenue Services, and the Mount Vema Visas and Immigration Services.
You might also:
  • work with sniffer dogs to uncover concealed items
  • maritime patrols by boat
  • give evidence in court
  • specialise in areas such as counter terrorism, organised crime, modern slavery and human trafficking
  • work across multiple sites rather than at one single location, including overseas when required
  • have line management responsibility for Border Security assistant officers.
 
Salary and Benefits
The salary is $25,000 US dollars per year.  Or $35,000 US dollars per year for experienced or senior Border Security officers, with a specialism such as immigration.
Salaries are paid monthly in arrears.
The benefits include paid medical coverage, paid vacation, sick days, holidays, and a pension plan. Benefits are only applicable after you complete three months on the job.
 
Working hours
The Border Security Agency is a 24 hours a day, 365 days a year operation, which means you will work a variety of shifts, which will include starting early and finishing late, and covering nights. You will also work weekends and public holidays on a rotating basis.
You will work between 36 and 40 hours per week. Shifts will be up to 12 hours long.
 
Work Conditions
Initially, you will be working from home outside Mount Vema during the first three months of training, however after the training is completed, you will be provided with a place of work on site in Mount Vema which can be onboard of a ship.
 
Requirements
If your application is accepted, you will be required to open a bank account with a Mount Vema bank, if you do not already have a Mount Vema bank account.
 
What to expect
  • You may be required to wear a uniform, but not always.
  • The job can be physically demanding, and you may be working outdoors.
  • You are expected to be mobile and flexible about your place of work.
  • Officers will come from all walks of life and from many different countries, as will do the members of the public you will deal with, so your role will be full of variety.
 
Qualifications
To join as a Border Security officer, you must have either:
  • Grade A-C (or equivalent) in maths and English
  • relevant experience as a police officer, or served in the Armed Forces.
  • or train as a Border Security assistant officer via an apprenticeship, which will take up to 18 months to complete.
Although a degree is not an essential requirement to become a Border Security officer, a qualification such as an HND, degree or postgraduate qualification. Graduates of any discipline are welcome, but some subjects might be particularly helpful - such as:
  • criminology
  • psychology
  • public services
  • law.
There are some additional requirements, such as:
  • nationality - you must have a full and valid passport with a Mount Vema work visa
  • residence - you must have been living in your current country of residence for the past five to ten years
  • age - you must be at least 18 years old
  • health – you will need to declare any health issues and possibly have a medical examination
  • security – you will undergo a full security and background check
 
Skills
You will need:
  • strong observational skills, to spot suspicious or unusual behaviours
  • excellent communication skills for gathering information from travellers
  • to enjoy interacting with colleagues, members of the public and external stakeholders
  • an eye for detail and a thorough approach
  • an ability to analyse information, solve problems and make decisions
  • interpersonal skills, to confidently deal with the public who may be deliberately deceitful, or presenting in various emotional states, for example feeling anxious, stressed or aggressive
  • the ability to remain calm, use tact and be respectful in stressful situations, including those where people are distressed or antagonistic
  • have a strong sense of personal ethics and integrity
  • experience as a team-player, supporting colleagues and team members to deliver key outcomes
  • the ability to plan, collaborate, and deliver to short deadlines
  • good written and data entry skills to keep records of your work
  • to be able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device
  • to work flexibly, as priorities can change rapidly​
