Waste Management Officer for the 5th Avenue development sites

If you like handling responsibility, and you have an interest in the environment, sustainability, and the ability to understand complex guidelines and legislation, the City of Mount Vema Breakwaters Project Management is looking for a Waste Management Officer for the 5th Avenue development sites, to organise and manage waste disposal, collection and recycling facilities associated with the construction of the City of Mount Vema Breakwaters and the 5th Avenue projects.
 
The successful candidate will also be responsible for waste treatment and cleaning operations of the 7 sections of the 20 kilometers 5th Avenue. The post combines waste management and recycling functions.
 
You will have to balance providing the highest standards of service, with safe waste disposal (in line with Mount Vema Government Guidelines), and recycling targets.
 
Responsibilities
As a waste management officer for the 5th Avenue, you will need to:
  • oversee waste management schemes
  • supervise the transportation of waste to ensure that it takes place efficiently without contaminating air, land, and sea or the marine life
  • assist with the development, promotion and implementation of new waste disposal schemes
  • ensure compliance with current guidelines, or legislation in the transportation, handling and disposal of waste
  • formulate and control budgets for waste disposal
  • collate statistics and compile reports often to strict deadlines
  • monitor the quality and performance of waste services, including contract management of external providers
  • assist with the development of information and promotional materials
  • aim to meet waste reduction and recycling targets
  • deal with enquiries and complaints from members of the public both in person and by phone or email
  • investigate and follow up claims of the illegal dumping of waste and work with other waste regulation enforcement staff
  • identify and target areas with fly tipping or black bag problems, working to find solutions to eliminate these
  • consult with building site workers, contractors, and residents about waste management issues, identify their requirements and provide appropriate solutions
  • develop research projects and contribute to the activities of groups concerned with waste disposal.
 
Salary and Benefits
The salary is:
$50,000 US dollars per year for an Operations manager or chartered waste manager
$40,000 US dollars for an Experienced and senior level officer
$30,000 US dollars – Starting salary for a newly trained officer
Salaries are paid monthly in arrears.
The benefits include paid medical coverage, paid vacation, sick days, holidays, and a pension plan. Benefits are only applicable after you complete three months on the job.
 
Working hours
Working hours will be 9am to 5pm. Facilities will be open seven days a week, so weekend work is a possibility. You need to be fairly flexible when meeting with contractors, and the public. Overtime and flexi-time arrangements are likely in these circumstances.
 
Requirements
If your application is accepted, you will be required to open a bank account with a Mount Vema bank, if you do not already have a Mount Vema bank account, and a Mount Vema work visa.
 
What to expect
  • Much of the work will be office based, although you may be able to work from home. The job will also involve visiting contractors and facilities.
  • The dress code is smart for the office and practical for work on site.
 
Qualifications
A degree in waste management or similar is preferred such as environmental protection or a subject related to environmental management. Other relevant subjects include:
  • biological or biochemical sciences
  • chemical and physical sciences
  • civil, structural or mechanical engineering
  • earth sciences
  • environmental science
  • geography and/or geology.
 
Skills
You will need to have:
  • the ability to grasp complex and dynamic guidelines or legislation
  • the capacity to explain, apply and monitor such guidelines or legislation
  • effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • patience and resilience
  • analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • leadership and management qualities
  • good organisational and administrative skills
  • an interest in, and understanding of, environment and sustainability issues
  • good IT and general office skills
  • a Mount Vema driving licence will be required at a later stage.
