Job Vacancy – Construction Sector: Handy Deed is looking for site managers for a barge building project in Mount Vema

Handy Deed is looking for Construction Site Managers for a barge assembling project in Mount Vema. The successful candidates will have a responsible role, ensuring that safety standards and procedures are met to deliver on time and to budget.

As a site manager, you will be responsible for ensuring that the barge that will be mainly used as a floating building site project is completed safely, within an agreed timeframe and budget. Managing the practical side of every stage of the build, you will work closely with the contraction manager and other professionals such as welding specialists, crane operators, and merchant marine officers in planning and delivery.

You will also supervise and direct a range of operations on site and ensure that all tradespeople and contractors are working together to an agreed plan and that progress is being made. Depending on your experience working at sea, you may oversee the whole barge project assembling site, or a big part of this large and complex project.
 
Responsibilities
As a construction site manager for this project, you'll need to:
  • plan and coordinate the assigned project from start to finish, including organising the schedule of work, costings and budget
  • plan the work and oversee the buying of necessary materials and equipment
  • hire and manage staff for the project, or work with the staff available onsite
  • manage the construction site on a day-to-day basis, including supervising the labour force, monitoring subcontractors, checking materials, inspecting work and overseeing quality control
  • ensure the project is delivered on time and on budget by setting benchmarks, agreeing budgets and monitoring progress
  • check design documents with superior offices. Note: There may not be architecture drawings for this project, so you will need to rely of sketches and guidelines provided by management.
  • promote and maintain health and safety, including site inspections to ensure safety rules are being followed
  • write reports
  • maintain regular communication and attend meetings with the management and their representatives to inform them of progress on the project
  • communicate with any consultants, subcontractors, supervisors, planners, quantity surveyors and others involved in the project
  • deal with any unexpected problems that may occur during the project.
 
Salary
Note: salaries can be paid either in Mount Vema golles or in foreign exchange.
  • The starting salary ranges from 25,000 golles to 30,000 golles per year paid monthly.
  • For experienced applicants the salary ranges from 30,000 golles to 45,000 golles.
 
Relocation and Benefits
This vacancy requires applicants to travel to Mount Vema where the employer will provide free meals, and free accommodation for the duration of the contract. However, applicants must make their own travel arrangements to Mount Vema. 
Additional benefits such as health insurance, and gym and leisure memberships are offered.
 
Working hours
The working week is typically around 40 hours, though more is common around project deadlines. The employer offers paid overtime. Due to the nature of the work, and the initial stage of the project, the employer will not require you to work at night, however the employer may require you to work over public holidays.
 
What to expect
  • As a key point of contact on the site, managing competing demands from the management, and a range of other professionals can sometimes seem overwhelming.
  • On site you will work in all weathers, you will wear protective and high-visibility clothing, which will be provided by your employer.
 
Qualifications
Professional qualification is not necessary however you will need at least some experience in roles such as site supervisor, or even as a merchant marine officer.

You'll need to show:
  • strong communication skills - for liaising with a wide range of professionals and workers on site
  • leadership skills and an ability to motivate your team to ensure a high standard of work
  • excellent planning and organisational skills - for writing and monitoring project plans and schedules and utilising time and resources effectively
  • resilience and problem-solving skills - in order to overcome unexpected challenges during the construction process
  • an ability to make decisions under pressure, so that the project can progress
  • strong attention to detail for conducting site inspections and managing complex contracts
  • an awareness of health and safety procedures and legislation - for running a safe construction site
  • sound commercial awareness - to allocate and manage your budget effectively and to understand management concerns
  • some numerical and IT skills
